Port Authority

Over the years, SES Computers has continued to provide additional equipment, extensions, upgrades, and support-on-demand, both remote and on-site, as Portland Port has employed more staff and expanded their client base.

More recently, SES was tasked to take account of the following factors, and provide a solution for future requirements:

  • Data Security.
  • Remote access to data and applications.
  • The ability to send and receive emails at workstations.
  • Anti-virus protection.
  • Failure of one service should not affect another.

Our recommendation, which employs three servers, as set out below, was agreed by the Client, and implemented by SES:

  • One server handles active directory, files, and VPN access.  It provides network communications control, a central store for files, and enables remote access to the network over the Internet using VPN.
  • The exchange server provides email and calendar functions for users.
  • The terminal services server runs the applications software, enabling both remote and local users to run the programs and access the data efficiently, without bandwidth limitations, particularly over the Internet. Efficient remote operation is important, as a number of staff are required to log onto the system and carry out tasks from home and elsewhere.

In addition to on-going support, SES also provides training to users on network and operating issues.
