At our first visit to the company, we observed that operation of the whole Network was very sluggish. The Client was also receiving large amounts of Spam emails (over 5000 per day). The main issues were:
- The Server was running with high processor and very high memory utilization (97%), with only 5% of disk space free.

The email server (Exchange 2000) was configured incorrectly, and was acting as an open relay, with the result that Hackers were using the server to re-transmit Spam emails.
During this first visit, SES staff re-configured the server, thus securing the system and closing the open relay. The Client users also found that system performance improved, and there were far fewer failures.
Some three months later, SES embarked on a system enhancement program for the Client. The objectives were to increase system capacity, include facilities for more users, and improve system performance. An equally important consideration was better system reliability. The project involved:
- Design, install and commission a new Server. Provide a UPS so that functionality is maintained in the event of mains power failure.
- Augment and improve the Network Infrastructure. The existing cabling was found to be old and inadequate, and there were not enough connection points at the required positions within the offices and production areas. New cabling and connectors were installed, together with Patch Panels, to provide the necessary level of flexibility for routing telephone and data links to users.
- All of the equipment was assembled into a floor-standing cabinet with 19 inch rack-mount facilities. Patch leads were used to select the required data and telephone links by connecting between appropriate sockets on the Patch Panels and Ports on the Data and Telephone Switches.
Subsequently, SES has provided a support service to the Client. Any problems with operation of the network system are dealt with either remotely, or by attendance at their premises. We always aim to provide a fast response, and generally solutions are provided shortly after problems are notified to us. We also implement upgrades and network extensions as required.
