What is a Hosted Desktop?

While often referred to as a desktop service or DasS, a hosted desktop, much like the name refers too, a desktop in the cloud!

You already have many services you use everyday that are cloud based – such as emails, online storage and word-processing softwares. Why not host your entire desktop? By moving your whole computer online you will gain full access to applications, software, data and storage no matter where you are, from any device.

We know what you are thinking. Years ago, when we first heard about hosted desktops, we couldn’t even imagine what that would mean, or what it would look like. The reality is that it looks exactly like a traditional desktop. All your apps are in the same place, the menus look the same, everything. It’s just that the information is saved remotely, so you can get it whenever you like, from anywhere. Our data centres are encrypted and completely secure, plus you don’t have to worry about someone spilling coffee on your computer and losing all your data.

So, why should you use a Hosted Desktop?

While everything looks the same to the user physically, everything is stored remotely which gives the advantage of being able to access all your data no matter where you are. Think about it like Netflix or any other streaming service. You used to have hundreds of DVDs with your favourite films or TV shows that you would need to watch them, now all those shows are available on almost any screen you log into. All you need is an internet connection and your password.

Remote working has become significantly more popular over the last 12 months. You no longer need to worry about bringing your work computer and files home, just log in and all the info is ready to use. In addition to this flexibility, compatibility issues are eliminated and the risk of physically transporting files from one location to another is removed.

One Solution

If you are running your own business it is likely you are already somewhat familiar with cloud computing, but just in a broken up form. It can become overwhelming when a company utilises multiple cloud offerings across storage, email and office applications. By moving to a Hosted Desktop you are combining all services into one; one password, one provider and one security solution.

Data storage and security are all taken care of automatically, plus with regular back-ups, everything is safe.

Security

The reason Hosted Desktops are growing exponentially in popularity at the moment isn’t just down to flexibility, its also due to security. Your computer’s security is no longer dependent on a device anymore. The desktops are hosted safely in a secure infrastructure.

Similar to how you would usually keep your software up to date, a hosted desktop is automatically updated and performs security updates for the entire system and all desktops. Data is also automatically encrypted to make sure no one, including us, can see your private information.

Plus if you lose your device, its damaged or stolen, none of your personal information will be lost.

If 2020 has taught us anything, its that you need to be ready to adjust your working conditions quickly and securely. Rented Apps provides just that.
